Maudlin Castle

Maudlin Castle (also Magdalan Castle , Irish Caisleán Mhaidilín ) is a tower house in the city of Kilkenny in County Kilkenny, Ireland . The castle is considered a national monument . It is located on Maudlin Street just north of the River Nore and east of Kilkenny College .

history

The leprosy broke out in Ireland for the first time from the 10th or 11th century. Many leprosy houses have been consecrated to Mary Magdalene because of their association with sexual excesses and prostitution , which have been mistakenly linked to leprosy.

St. Mary Magdalene Hospital in Kilkenny opened sometime before 1327 (possibly by William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke in the early 13th century) and it quickly became one of the most important leper houses in Ireland. It was on the outskirts of the city and was surrounded by high walls. The entrance was secured by a gatehouse . It also had a chapel , a cemetery, and 20 acres of agricultural land. It was connected to St. John's Priory .

The tower, which has been preserved to this day, was built at the beginning of the 16th century. When the English monasteries were dissolved , this hospital was also closed. Maudlin Castle has been described as “a small, roofed castle built to defend the lepers and residents of the suburbs; it is now empty and worthless. ”In 1628 there is a reference to a“ city moat ”near the Marienkirche; thus there could have been a ditch under the gate . The hospital was donated to the Kilkenny Corporation by King Charles I of England .

The hospital also served as a "retirement home" for wealthy families such as the Rothes , Langtons and Shees . Archaeological excavations on the road leading past it indicate a "diet" of beef , mutton , ham and wild duck meat .
