The Maulde is a river in France , in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region . It rises in the Massif Central , on the Plateau de Millevaches . The source is about 750 meters above sea level, in the municipality of Gentioux-Pigerolles , in the middle of the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Nature Park . The river generally drains west and flows into the Vienne as a right tributary after 69 kilometers southeast of Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat . On her way she crosses the Creuse and Haute-Vienne departments . The water from the Maulde supplies the Lac de Vassivière , a 970 hectare reservoir . There are also a number of smaller reservoirs in the lower reaches of the river.

From here in 1889 the town of Bourganeuf was supplied with electricity over a distance of 14 kilometers in a pioneering effort at the time .
