Sandberg played in the men's team of IFK Göteborg from the mid-1910s . In the summer of 1918 he stood at the side of Herbert Karlsson , Caleb Schylander , Erik Hjelm , Henry Almén and Valdus Lund in the final of the Svenska Mästerskapet . Against Helsingborgs IF he prevailed with his club with a 5-0 victory, thus IFK Göteborg won the Swedish championship for the third time.

In September 1918, Sandberg made his debut in the national team when they lost to the Norwegian national team in Oslo with a 2-1 defeat . In the following games he was often on the field for the national team. Ultimately, he was also in the contest at the 1920 Olympic football tournament in Antwerp . This game, his eleventh international match , was also his last appearance in the Swedish national jersey.

Subsequently, Sandberg continued to work for IFK Göteborg. After he had already played in a league competition in the intermittent Svenska series for the club, he was on the pitch for the club in the early years of Allsvenskan .

Sandberg was awarded the Stora Grabbars Märke . Nothing is known about the further life path after his playing career. His younger brother Ragnar Sandberg was a painter, and his brother inspired him to paint football.
