Max Adler (historian)

Johannes Rudolf Max Adler (born March 26, 1867 in Magdeburg , † January 18, 1937 in Salzwedel ) was a German historian, literary scholar and educator.

The son of a civil servant passed his Abitur in 1887 at the Magdeburg High School . In 1891 he was in Leipzig with a dissertation on Alexander the Great Dr. phil. received his doctorate and passed the first state examination for teaching there the following year. Then he completed the preparatory service for the higher teaching post in Magdeburg by 1894. Until 1897 he worked as an assistant teacher at the cathedral high school in Magdeburg, in 1897 Adler became a senior teacher in Halle ( Francke Foundations ). From 1907 to 1932 he was the director of the high school in Salzwedel.

Adler was active in the Altmark History Association and was the initiator of the 1932 founding of the Johann Friedrich Danneil Museum in the former Propsteig building in Salzwedel. Because of his services to the expansion of the "Siedlung Ost" in Salzwedel, a street there was named Max-Adler-Straße in 1937 .

Adler gained national importance as a researcher into the work of the writer Wilhelm Raabe , with whom he became friends. Adler was the first to include Raabe's work in educational literature and campaigned for it to be included in German lessons.
