Max Cronenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Cronenberg (born October 26, 1857 in Bonn , † December 24, 1924 in Rolandswerth ) was a German architect and building contractor who mainly worked in his hometown of Bonn.

Live and act

Cronenberg, the son of a businessman, was born in the house at Sternstrasse 15 in Bonn's old town . After apprenticeship as a bricklayer and master craftsman's examination, he went freelance as an architect and building contractor in Bonn in the mid-1880s, planning and building a total of 73 houses in the city - including many as a builder. His main focus was on private residential building, especially in the southern part of the city as one of the largest closed, preserved Wilhelminian style residential areas in Germany and the area of Poppelsdorf adjacent to it, where he was one of the numerically most important architects and builders. Starting in 1885, Cronenberg moved with his family seven times within Bonn due to his speculative construction activity, during which he lived in the newly built houses until they were sold on. In 1898, out of private interest, he acquired the castle-like Sternenburg (built from 1746 in place of an older moated castle) in Poppelsdorf and set up an art salon there. When the castle grounds were to be built after Poppelsdorf's incorporation into Bonn in 1904, Cronenberg unsuccessfully tried to preserve the castle in the course of the sale in the hope that a local museum could be set up there; In 1908 it was finally canceled. With the beginning of the First World War, which brought a construction freeze, he went into retirement. In 1915 Cronenberg moved with his family to Rolandswerth , where he had built a house three years earlier.

A set of living room furniture designed by Cronenberg from around 1880, consisting of a table, chair, sofa and mirror, has been in the possession of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn as an example of Wilhelminian handicrafts since 1985 .

The
Cronenberg
family was married to Anna Catharina Kleefisch (1863–1946) from 1885; the marriage had ten children.
