Max Joseph Greater

Max Joseph Großer SAC (born August 15, 1887 in Hanover , † March 19, 1940 in Berlin ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian .

Life

He grew up in the orphanage of the Vincentians in Döhren-Wülfel . Larger joined the Pallottines in Limburg an der Lahn in 1901 . He attended the Pallottine schools in Vallendar and Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein . In 1905 he began the novitiate in Limburg. He was ordained a priest on July 9, 1911. After further studies at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Münster , he took over lectures on the New Testament and in missiology at the Theological-Philosophical University of his order in Limburg. After receiving his doctorate in 1921 at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , he was General Secretary of the Raphaelswerk , formerly the Raphaelsverein, from 1930 to 1940 in Hamburg. During the National Socialist era, he courageously campaigned for the emigration of Jews. In January 1936 and November 1937 the first house searches by the Gestapo took place at the Raphaelsverein and on December 17, 1937, Großer was captured for the first time. After his release, he traveled again to the Netherlands and Rome to negotiate on behalf of the Jews. During negotiations at the apostolic nunciature and the Brazilian embassy in Berlin, he suddenly died of heart failure on March 19, 1940.
