Max Oppenheim (born May 17, 1876 in Barchfeld , Thuringia; † September 12, 1947 in Brussels ) was a cantor , rabbi assistant and the last teacher at the Jewish school in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

Life

Oppenheim was already included in the tax list of the district synod community in 1916. In 1928 he became the owner of the house at Goebenstrasse 2, located directly across from the Düren hospital .

Oppenheim was cantor and rendant of the Jewish community and teacher at the Jewish school, which was directly behind the Düren synagogue on Schützenstrasse . In the pogrom night from November 9th to 10th, 1938, not only the synagogue but also the school was destroyed. Oppenheim now taught the children in his private house at Goebenstrasse 2. Luise Hartoch helped him. He rented the hall in the house to the city of Düren as a classroom. The lease with the city was signed on March 14, 1939. In 1940 Oppenheim emigrated to Belgium .

In memory of Max Oppenheim, the square in front of the StadtCenter Düren was named Max-Oppenheim-Platz . In 2007 a plaque to commemorate Oppenheim was placed on Goebenplatz.
