Reviews
James Berardinelli compared the film on ReelViews with the films produced in Hong Kong . While watching, he had the impression that he had seen the film before, for which the plot, the action scenes and the presence of Jean-Claude Van Damme were responsible. Berardinelli scoffed that the scriptwriter took the idea with the twin brothers from a soap opera . He also advised that instead of this film, one of the director's films produced in Hong Kong should be seen.
Peter Stack wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of March 14, 1997 that the film started “furiously” but would become an “embarrassing” exercise in terms of pointlessness and predictability after four minutes. The plot is "lame", the dialogues are "unimaginative".
The magazine Cinema said: "In the end," Maximum Risk "became nothing more than a typical Van-Damme: a conventional quickie with a handful of spectacular action sequences that enrich the moderately exciting dramaturgy with the necessary visual values."
The lexicon of international films wrote: "An action film that is very visually powerful and economically staged without much effort, but its visual qualities are overshadowed by some speculative depictions of violence."

The film was shot in Nice , Paris , New York City and Toronto , among others . Its production amounted to an estimated 25 million US dollars . It grossed approximately $ 14.5 million in cinemas in the United States and approximately $ 51.7 million worldwide.
