history

The native people of the region were the Chocta Indians . The tribe sells this land to the US government. The first settlers came around 1778. Because of the abundance of forests in the area, the place soon developed into an attractive place to obtain wood as fuel for steam locomotives . In 1880 a post office was opened. During some construction on the Little Rock and Fort Smith Railroad , the site manager in charge of this section had his office on wheels in a converted Pullman wagon called the Mayflower . This name was also used as an identification for sending and receiving telegraph messages and eventually adopted for the entire place. In the 1930s, the location of the place was changed slightly due to a motorway construction. With the construction of the Lake Conway dam , Lake Conway was dammed in 1948 and enlarged to approx. 27 km². This marked the start of a significant boom in water sports and fishing for Mayflower. Hiking trails ( nature trails ) have also been laid out on the lake and in the wooded area, from which the species-rich flora and fauna can be observed. For example, 35 breeding bird species and a further 75 species were identified as migrants or summer visitors . The white-tailed deer can also be found in the forests .
