Mechthild of Bavaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mechthild von Bayern (* July 12, 1532 , † November 2, 1565 in Baden-Baden ) was a princess of Bavaria and by marriage Margravine of Baden.

Life

Mechthild was a daughter of Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria (1493–1550) from his marriage to Maria Jakobäa von Baden (1507–1580), daughter of Margrave Philip I of Baden . The princess was initially engaged to Prince Philipp Magnus von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1527–1553), but the latter fell before the marriage in the battle of Sievershausen .

She married Margrave Philibert of Baden (1536–1569) in Regensburg on January 17, 1557 . Philibert had met Mechthild, whose qualities were described as excellent, at the Munich court, where he had lived for three years as the duke's ward. The marriage of the third-degree related spouses had been concluded without papal dispensation . Pope Paul IV therefore instructed Bishop Otto von Augsburg to intervene against marriage. After lengthy negotiations and a payment of 300 Rhenish guilders to equip poor girls, a settlement was reached.

With the help of the Catholic margravine, Johann Ulrich Zasius came into contact with Philibert, who was to check the margrave's orthodoxy on behalf of the emperor. Mechthilde was buried in the collegiate church in Baden-Baden. The wall epitaph of the margrave couple is the work of the sculptor Johann von Trarbach.

progeny

Mechthild had the following children from their marriage, who were brought up at the court of Mechthild's brother Albrecht in Munich after the death of their parents :

⚭ 1585 Duke Johann Wilhelm von Jülich-Kleve and Berg (1562–1609)
⚭ 1578 Wilhelm von Rosenberg (1535–1592)
⚭ 1584 Landgrave Georg Ludwig von Leuchtenberg (1563–1613)
