The medal for the volunteers of the campaign in Spain ( it. Medaglia commemorativa della campagna di Spagna ) was an award of the Kingdom of Italy , which on June 6, 1940 by Victor Emanuel III. was founded in one step by decree 1244/40. It was the counterpart to the German Spanish Cross and could be awarded to all Italian members of the Corpo Truppe Volontarie . The prerequisite for the award was at least three months of service on the part of the Spanish nationalists under Francisco Franco as well as for military bravery in front of the enemy, wounding and merit in the troop leadership.

Appearance

The bronze medal , which was awarded with a certificate, has a diameter of 33 mm and shows a naked rider on a horse in the middle of its obverse , holding a sword in his right hand. The horse is led by the Roman goddess of victory Victoria . Under the legs of the horse, a snake that winds along with the hammer and sickle of the Communist symbolize. The reverse of the medal shows the geographical representation of the Iberian Peninsula and the tip of Gibraltar . The Spanish inscription (War for the liberation and unity of Spain) can be read between a raised lion's head (above) and the Spanish coat of arms (below) GUERRA POR / LA LIBERACION / Y UNIDAD DE / ESPANA / 17 JULIO 1936. The date stands for the beginning of the Spanish Civil War .

Carrying method

The medal was worn over the upper left breast pocket of the borrower on a 37 mm wide ribbon that alternated between black (3 mm) - red (6 mm) - yellow (6.5 mm) - red (6 mm) - yellow (6, 5 mm) - red (6 mm) - black (3 mm). The corresponding strap buckle is of the same quality.
