The Meesiaceae ( broken Moose ) are a family of mosses . The family is named after David Meese (1723-1770), a Dutch gardener.

features

The small to large, perennial plants grow in lawns on moist, humus-rich rocks and in peat bogs. In contrast to the very different characteristics of the moss plants ( gametophytes ), the sporophytes are fairly uniform. The seta is usually long (up to 10 centimeters). The capsule is asymmetrical, curved, pear-shaped, obliquely mouthed, the capsule neck clearly separated, the capsule lid is cone-shaped, the hood (kalyptra) is cap-shaped. A peristome is usually formed, 16-toothed, double, whereby the outer peristome teeth are often significantly shorter than the inner ones.
