Megger in Dover

The Megger Group Limited is a multinational company based in Dover ( England ), Dallas ( USA ), Valley Forge (USA), Täby ( Sweden ) and Baunach ( Germany ), which manufactures electrical test and measurement instruments and developed. The company is particularly known for its insulation testers, but now also manufactures products for other areas, for example cable fault location, earthing testers, low-resistance testers, cabling , insulation testing , multimeters , testers for electrical systems, clamp meters, transformers and much more

history

In the course of time, there have been numerous companies that have been accepted into the Megger Group or were otherwise connected with it.

Evershed & Vignoles

Sydney Evershed (1858–1939) and Ernest Vignoles bought the measuring equipment division of Goolden and Trotter (the company they both worked for) and founded Evershed & Vignoles Limited on February 5, 1895. It is therefore likely that the beginnings of the Megger company date back to 1889. The company was then on the site of the Acton Lane Works, Chiswick in London (England), where it moved from Westbourne Park in 1903.

Sydney Evershed applied for multiple patents for various electrical devices over the years.

One of these devices was the "hand dynamo". This instrument was able to generate current that was strong enough to measure resistances in the megohm range. This created the basis for the construction of the first insulation tester. The MEG aohm met ER was renamed Megger and was subsequently registered as a brand name on May 25, 1903. The invention quickly became a popular method and became known to other engineers in the 1920s.

Due to the occurrence of electromagnetic interference, the first Megger insulation testers were built in two separate boxes. One of them was for power generation, the other for measurements. Later the test devices were built in a common unit. They were connected with a Bakelite cover and still had a foldable hand crank to operate the dynamo. The best-known tester was the so-called “Wee Megger”, “Meg” or “Megger Isolation tester”, which could generate up to 2500 V and measure resistances up to 20,000 megaohms. (The modern version of this device (Megger MJ15) can generate up to 5 kV).

In the 1920s, the company employed approximately 500 people. That number rose to over 1,000 during World War II, peaking in 1967 with 1,870 employees.

In 1965 Evershed & Vignoles Limited became part of the George Kent Group .

AVO

AVO model number 8

The invention of the first multimeter (multiple measuring device ) is attributed to a postal engineer named Donald Macadie . He had had enough of always carrying around two instruments for the maintenance of the telecommunication systems. Macadie therefore invented the first device that could measure both A mpere and V olt and O hm. Hence the device was named AVO .

Macadie brought his idea to the Automatic Coil Winder and Electrical Equipment Company (ACWEEC, probably founded in 1923). The first AVO was sold in 1923. Although it was initially only designed as a DC test device, many of its functions remained unchanged until the last model.

ACWEEC later became AVO Limited and subsequently manufactured devices and instruments with the AVO trademark. The original AVO multimeter has been manufactured continuously since its introduction in 1923. The last model came off the production line in 2008. Production was stopped solely because of the increasing difficulties in getting the necessary spare parts. The last model number 8, introduced in 1951, lasted for the following 57 years without being fundamentally changed.

AVO training institute

In 1963 Multi-Amp and AVO founded the Multi-Amp Institute . In 2004 the institute became the AVO Training Institute, Inc. , headquartered in Dallas , Texas . The AVO Training Institute was founded to offer training in the areas of electrical engineering, particularly with regard to safety, maintenance and the checking of electrical systems or devices.

In 1996 the institute was certified with ISO 9001 . To date, more than 23,000 maintenance and testing electricians from around the world have taken our courses.

The institute also has a Technical Resource Center - an online shop that offers books, training materials, personal safety equipment and tools. In principle, the training can take place in different places around the world, such as the Megger rooms in Paris .

Thorn Electronics / EMI

In 1970 the company was taken over by Thorn Electrical Industries (founded in 1936), just like others from the George Kent Group , who had also bought AVO Limited at the same time.

In 1987 the name of the company was changed for the first time; it was now called Megger Instruments Limited .

Megger

Megger Instruments Limited was located at AVO's Dover manufacturing facility, Archliffe Road, CT17 9EN, Kent, England. This is also the current company location in the UK.

Due to the popularity of AVO products, the company changed its name to AVO Megger Instruments Limited in 1991. In 2000, the company initially operated as AVO International Holdings Limited , and from 2002 as AVO International Limited .

Finally, in 2002, the entire Megger Group changed its name to Megger Group Limited , by which it is known to this day.

The Dover production facility employs around 230 people. In total (including the sales channels) Megger Group Limited employs around 1500 people worldwide today.

Based on the groundbreaking inventions that made the Megger Limited Group possible, the two main meeting rooms in Dover are named after Evershed and Macadie.

Biddle

For many years the James G. Biddle Company in Pennsylvania was both the United States importer of Megger products and a manufacturer of products under its own name. 1989 Biddle began with the production of a range of products to check the integrity of large battery systems, which later on the development of BITE ( tight. B attery I mpedance T est E quipment) product line led.

In 1991, Biddle, Megger and MultiAmp merged to form AVO International . Products are still sold under the Biddle name today. Biddle was one of the first to make commercial cable fault location systems.

States

Megger Group Limited owns the US manufacturing facility in Dallas, Texas. The Dallas facility manufactures terminal blocks and test switches under the States trade name , which has been in existence since the 1940s.

PowerDB

PowerDB was acquired in fall 2005. PowerDB develops software to support the execution of tests and maintenance as well as to store the test data, which is fully compatible with many Megger products.

Programma

The Programma Electric AB is a Swedish manufacturer of test and measurement instruments, which was established in 1976. Programmas products include: circuit breaker testers, battery testers, microohmmeters and relay testers. The production facility is located in Täby , Sweden . In March 2001, Programma was sold to GE Energy and has been part of Megger Group Limited since June 2007.

Pax Diagnostics

In October 2008 Megger Group Limited took over Pax Diagnostics (Sweden). Pax manufactures transformer testers as well as insulation testers. Pax Diagnostics was founded in 2004 by former Programma employees and is also based in Täby, Sweden.

SebaKMT

In July 2012 Megger acquired SebaKMT, which specializes in locating and testing power cables and detecting pipe leaks.

SebaKMT has development and production sites in Germany and the USA. The takeover was accompanied by a significant increase in Megger's sales. This significantly improved the Group's position in the market for test equipment for the electrical sector.

Intellectual property

Trademark

The company's first trademark, the Megger name, was registered as early as 1903 and remains the intellectual property of the Megger Limited Group to this day. It is inadmissible to use the word Megger as a verb, noun or in the plural. Furthermore, it is illegal to use the Megger name in relation to a product that is not manufactured by Megger or one of its subsidiaries.

The majority of the names and trademarks of the companies taken over by the Megger Group now belong to Megger, including: AVO , Biddle , Biddle AVO , Biddle Megger , States , PowerDB , as well as Programma and Pax Diagnostics .

Some product names such as Megger, AVO, DLRO, MFT, MIT, MPRT etc. are also protected by patents.

The Megger Group publishes a free magazine called "Electrical tester" which appears every three months. The magazine is aimed at electrical installers who are considered users of Megger products.

Patents

The current number of Megger patents is very difficult to estimate. The original Megger insulation test patent is more than 100 years old. Some groundbreaking technologies were developed and published by the Megger group during this time.

On May 25, 2003, the Megger Group celebrated a whole century of innovations.

SMT machines

The Dover manufacturing facility has its own EMC laboratory and SMT machines. However, many of the mechanical parts must be purchased from other companies. (This was also the reason for the discontinuation of production of the AVO model number 8)

All production sites have ISO 9001: 200 certification. Dover and Täby are also ISO 14001 certified.

Sales and technical support

The Megger Group has more than 1000 distribution points in more than 132 countries. 85% of sales are made through the distribution network. There are sales offices in several countries (see map), but many of the products are sold in collaboration with specialist dealers and other partners, such as RS Components or, more recently, Test Equipment Connection Corporation .

There are sales and technical support offices throughout the USA and Canada , as well as in Dover, Paris , Oberursel , Mumbai , Sydney and Bahrain (15 in total).

research

Megger regularly sponsors projects at the University of Kent and also works with other universities.

Charity

After the severe earthquake in Sichuan in 2008, Megger donated 5% of Chinese sales to the local Red Cross for three months. Also, to help even more, a 15% discount has been granted on all equipment sold in China.

More than $ 9,000 worth of electrical test equipment was donated to Mesalands Community College's North American Wind Research and Training Center (NAWRTC).

Volunteers at the Dover manufacturing facility regularly donate blood. The blood donation mobile is driven directly to the Megger site so that the employees do not have to go to the normal blood donation point in Dover.
