The Megyeri híd (German: Megyeri bridge , until 2008 M0-s északi Duna-hídja ) is a motorway bridge of the M0 over the Danube in Hungary , which connects the north of Budapest with Budakalász . The 1,862 m long cable-stayed bridge is the longest of the eleven Danube bridges in Budapest and the second longest bridge in Hungary. It was completed in 2008, making it the youngest of the Budapest bridges.

history

Planning and construction

The planning for a road bridge in the north of Budapest began in 1993 with the aim of relieving traffic in the northern districts and in particular on the Árpád Bridge . The planning process took over 10 years, among other things because the Újpest district and several localities on the Buda Danube side raised concerns about the expected higher traffic volume. In addition, the planning led over the southern tip of the Szentendre Island , which is designated as a water protection area, so that special environmental requirements had to be taken into account. In 2005, the Hungarian Ministry of Economics and Transport awarded the contract to build the bridge to a consortium made up of Strabag and Hídépítő Zrt.

Construction work on the bridge, designed by Mátyás Hunyadi , began in February 2006 and lasted 29 months at a cost of around 63 billion forints . On September 30, 2008, the Megyeri Bridge was opened by the then Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány .

Naming

During the construction phase, the bridge was given the provisional name M0-s északi Duna-hídja ("northern M0 Danube bridge"). In order to find the most suitable name for the structure, the Ministry of Economics and Transport initiated an online survey in the summer of 2006, in which the action actor Chuck Norris was in the lead with 9,000 votes in early August . After several international news agencies reported on this intermediate result, the American comedy show The Colbert Report took up the topic and presenter Stephen Colbert asked his viewers to vote for him. Eventually Colbert won the vote by 14 million votes over runner-up, Miklós Zrínyi . The Hungarian ambassador to the United States, who appeared in person on the show after the vote, said, however, that Colbert must speak Hungarian fluently and must have already passed away in order to be eligible for the namesake.

However, this vote was only planned in advance as part of the naming process. Among other things, the municipal councils of the neighboring towns and experts such as linguists were able to submit suggestions. Ultimately, the choice fell on the name Megyeri híd, as this connects Káposztás megyer and Békás megyer .

Coming from the Pest side, the Megyeri Bridge crosses the main branch of the Danube, the Szentendre Island and the Danube branch, the Szentendrei Duna . It consists of five different sub-constructions. Only the 591 m long section over the main arm of the Danube is designed as a cable-stayed bridge, the remaining parts as a girder bridge . The bridge is 1,862 m long and 35 m wide.

The stay cable construction of the Megyeri híd is the first of its kind in Hungary and is based on two 100 m high A- pylons which are set up 300 m apart in the Danube. The roadway structure is suspended from these pylons on two levels with a total of 88 stay cables arranged in a fan shape. The carriageway is at a height of 10 meters. For maintenance work, the horizontal connecting beam in the pylons can be reached with a lift or stairs. The area above the girders is glazed and equipped with LEDs , which play light effects at night.

On Megyeri híd, there are two lanes in each direction and a hard shoulder that exceeds the prescribed minimum width, so that an expansion to three lanes would be possible in the future. There is also a bicycle path on the north side of the bridge and a pedestrian path on the south side.

Megyeri híd is part of the Budapest ring road, the Autópálya M0 . This currently ends (as of 2016) shortly after the western bridgehead, where the M0 ends in a roundabout with a connection to Hauptstrasse 11 and a shopping center. In the long term, however, the motorway ring is to be extended to Budakeszi and thus closed.

When the bridge opened, traffic was expected to be 50,000 to 60,000 vehicles per day. In 2015, 45,097 vehicles per day were counted on the Megyeri Bridge.
