My friend, the thief is a German comedy film from 1951 by Helmut Weiss with Hans Söhnker and the young Hardy Krüger in the leading roles.

action

The curly blond Bimbo, a representative of the "lost generation" right after the end of the Second World War , has become a do-it-all, rascal and crook due to the circumstances of the time. Bimbo commits minor crimes and thus survives without having developed anything like an awareness of injustice. One night he ambushes the famous writer Percy and steals his wallet. The thief then has nothing better in mind than to get drunk senselessly with the looted money. When the police arrested Bimbo in this condition, they discovered Percy's name and address in the wallet that was found on him, so that the state authorities assumed that what had been found must be the author. So the staggering bimbo is escorted "home" to Percy's address.

Percy is amazed when he sees the scoundrel again in no time. But instead of handing him over to the police right away, the experienced middle-aged man, encouraged by his elegant friend Nina, a dancer, decides, as a “good Christian”, to undertake a very personal rehabilitation measure on the failed bimbo. Percy's intention is to make the long-fingered Hallodri into someone, if not a good one, then at least a better person. A relapse occurs promptly, in which Bimbo shows that he cannot put his criminal past aside as quickly as hoped, but with a lot of effort and patience, Percy and Nina lead the young man back on the path of virtue. With a camera that has been given to him, he now wants to start a decent life as a reporter.

Production notes

The comedy was shot in the Göttingen film studios as well as in Hanover and at Gut Hardegen (outdoor shots). The premiere took place on November 8, 1951 in Hanover or Bremen, the (West) Berlin premiere was on December 14 of the same year.

Peter Paul Brauer also took over the production management. The film structures come from Walter Haaf and Hans Kutzner.

Reviews

In 1951, Der Spiegel stated: "A half-successful attempt by the author-director Helmut Weiß to turn the serious problem of juvenile criminals into a cinematic comedy."

The film service ruled: “Comedy about a juvenile gangster who is educated by his robbed victim, a writer. (...) Undemanding conversation with a few pleasant details. "
