Meir Lubor Dohnal

Meir Lubor Dohnal (born May 27, 1938 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech screenwriter , dramaturge , director , actor and university professor.

Life

After graduating from high school in the Prague district of Libeň in 1955, he completed his military service. After an unsuccessful application to the film and television faculty of the Academy of Musical Arts (FAMU), he initially worked as a construction worker until he was accepted there at the second attempt. From 1961 to 1965 he studied dramaturgy at FAMU with Ivan Osvald (1916–1986).

Filmmaking

From 1968 to 1969 he worked as a dramaturge at the Czechoslovak state film company ČSF (Československý film) in Bratislava - Koliba and from 1969 to 1971 as a screenwriter in the Barrandov film studios . He then worked in various craft professions until 1978. After signing Charter 77 like many other artists , he emigrated to Munich in 1978 , where he worked as a screenwriter, director and playwright as well as a columnist for Radio Free Europe . After the founding of the Czech Republic, he returned to his homeland.

Teaching activities

In 1996 he lectured at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU) and gave seminars for “Czech film dramaturgy” at the Institute for Slavic Philology (institut pro slovanskou filologii). From 1997 he lectured at FAMU, where he was permanently taken on as a teacher at the Faculty of Screenwriting and Dramaturgy in 2002 and appointed professor in 2005. Dohnal published in several film magazines. In 2009 he was retired.

Memberships

Dohnal is a member of the Artistic Committee of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (AMU) and a member of the scientific and artistic board of the University of Performing Arts in Bratislava (VŠMU). From 1991 to 2006 he was a board member of the State Fund for Cinematography (Státního fondu cinematography). He was also chairman for three years and has been a member of the RWE & Barrandov Studio Foundation management since 2006. He is an honorary member of the Slovak Film Academy.
