Master of the Schlutup Altarpiece
Master of the Schlutup Altarpiece is an art-historical emergency name and designates an unknown Low German carver of the late Middle Ages who worked in his workshop in Lübeck at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century .
Naming
The master of the Schlutuper Altar got his name in the 20th century. It was named after the Schlutup clan altar dated around 1500 . The so-called altar in the collection of the St. Anne's Museum shows scenes from the rest of Jesus' family , the Holy Tribe. It contains two wing reliefs with scenes from the life of St. Catherine of Alexandria (around 1480/90), which were probably inserted by Carl Julius Milde . The altar is from the St. Catherine's Church and is probably the occupied there Annenaltar of Mary brotherhood of musicians and minstrels identical. At an unknown point in time, the altar shrine was given to the St. Andreas Church in Schlutup and from there it entered the museum's collection before 1847.
Art-historical classification
According to the art-historical classification, the carvings by the master of the Schlutuper Altar come from Henning von der Heyde's circle, the paintings from Bernt Notke's circle . When the altar was being built, the performing artists often did without a signature of their works. Art history therefore tries to assign further works to a characteristic work by an artist, such as the eponymous altar here, based on the artistic handwriting.
