The Melanchthon-Gymnasium is a high school in the Berlin district of Hellersdorf in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district . The school is named after the philologist , philosopher , humanist , theologian , textbook author and poet Philipp Melanchthon .

The Melanchthon-Gymnasium was created in 2008 at the location of the Leonard-Bernstein-Oberschule from the merger with the Max-Reinhardt-Gymnasium and initially had the name Das Neue Gymnasium as its working title . In 2009 the school was named Melanchthon School (Gymnasium), which was shortened to Melanchthon Gymnasium in 2013 .

location

The Melanchthon-Gymnasium is located at Adele-Sandrock-Straße 75 in a quiet and green part of the district on the edge of nature reserves. The Louis-Lewin-Straße underground station ( line U5 , bus 195) and the bus stops Schwarzheider Straße and Branitzer Straße (line 195) on Louis-Lewin-Straße are within walking distance . School profile and specifics

Study and professional orientation

On September 17th, 2014, the Melanchthon-Gymnasium was one of ten Berlin schools to receive the award for excellent professional orientation, which has been an integral part of everyday life at the Gymnasium for years. The study and career orientation (in short: StuBe) runs through almost all years of the school: starting with the 9th grade with career choice lessons and the company internship up to the 11th grade, in which students have the opportunity to attend a supplementary StuBe course , in which they have time to deal with their personal career wishes and prospects. Regarding the successful career orientation concept of the Melanchthon-Gymnasium, the then acting deputy headmaster, Elke Baumann, said: "Ultimately, it is about the lively, active implementation of a concept - systematic, practical, sustainable and success-oriented through all grade levels".

Music emphasis of a basic 5th grade

So-called music profile classes are formed every school year , in which pupils from the 5th grade receive special musical training and in which existing musical talents are promoted. The special features of these classes include four hours of music lessons per week and vocal and instrumental training. In addition, the pupils of all classes can be musically active in their free time, the choir, the orchestra, numerous school bands or the event technology group offer opportunities for this.

5th grade with mathematical, information technology and natural science profiling

From the 2014/2015 school year, a so-called " MINT " class (mathematical, information technology, scientific and technical profiling) will be opened every year in addition to the music-oriented one . Interested parties must take an entrance examination. For the 2014/2015 school year, more students applied for the MINT class than could be accepted. This was also the case in the following years.

7th grade with mathematical, information technology and natural science profiling

From the 2020/2021 school year, in addition to the music-based and mathematical, information technology and scientific profiling in the 5th grade, a " MINT " class (mathematical, information technology, scientific and technical profiling) will also be opened in the 7th grade. Interested parties must take an entrance examination.

foreign languages

The variety of foreign languages at Melanchthon-Gymnasium enables the students to choose Spanish or French as a second foreign language and Japanese or Latin as a third foreign language (as part of the compulsory elective lessons) . The second foreign language is taught in 7th grade where possible in split groups, which makes it easier for the students to familiarize themselves with the new language. The third foreign language is taught across all classes from year 9.

Natural sciences

The classes in chemistry and physics are given in 7th grade in divided groups, which gives the students a good start in these subjects. Biology is taught from grade 8.

Elective courses

In the ninth grade, students at Melanchthon Gymnasium have the opportunity to choose an additional subject, usually computer science , geography , history , Latin, Japanese and natural sciences . In order to prepare the students for the qualification phase (upper secondary level), an additional, second elective subject is added in the 10th grade, in which the students can decide to strengthen their knowledge in subjects such as mathematics , English or German . Students of the MINT and the Musikzug must attend the relevant subject for at least one year.

Students can choose from a wide range of courses for upper secondary level:

In addition, the high school graduates look back together on particularly beautiful and impressive moments of their school career at the Melanchthon Gymnasium.

Furnishing

There are four computer rooms available to the students at the Melanchthon School. Furthermore, all of the school's specialist rooms are equipped with video projectors . As part of the “Berlin becomes chalk-free” project of the eEducation master plan, however, the conventional chalk boards in the specialist rooms are gradually being replaced by interactive whiteboards , which make teaching even more modern. Almost 90% of the classrooms are now equipped with interactive whiteboards .

School organization

Since the second half of the 2014/2015 school year, the school organization has been computer-aided, which is of particular benefit to the students of the Melanchthon-Gymnasium. The Schulportal365 software enables the substitution plans drawn up by the school management to be uploaded, as well as the notices and current notices to be uploaded. In addition, a forum enables communication between students and teachers. The school portal can be accessed by all students and parents on a password-protected website. An app for the Android operating system and IOS also enables notification when the substitution plan is updated. The advantage is that all information can be called up on the go. In the past, the substitution plans were only made available in paper form at school.

Pupils also have the opportunity to view the notices and the substitution plan on monitors in the school building. A touchscreen monitor offers teachers more options for interacting with the software.

Events

In every year of the grammar school, many events have a firm tradition. These include the summer and Christmas concert, a talent evening, theater performances as part of the drama class, the reading week, the recitation contest and poetry slam, the open day, the school festival , the Melanchthon trip to Wittenberg the 5th and 7th classes and school sports festival ( Federal Youth Games ).

The Melanchthon School Cup competition was held for the first time in the 2013/2014 school year . The classes receive points for special, also extracurricular achievements of individual students or the entire class, which are collected over the school year. The score can be viewed at any time on the school's website. At the end of the school year, the class with the most points is honored with the challenge cup and a material prize.

In July 2015, this honor took place for the first time as part of a newly launched school festival, which will also be organized by teachers and students on the day before the summer holidays in the following years, and which will end the school year with a solemn ceremony.

Modernization measures

Reconstruction of the school yard 2013–2016

After the 2013 summer vacation, work began on generously redesigning the school yard of the Melanchthon Gymnasium. Around 1.27 million euros were available for this. On the first school day of the 2014/2015 school year, the first part of the new school yard was opened and made available to the students. This area on Albert-Kuntz-Straße is characterized by a play and tobacco landscape on several levels, which especially does justice to the urge for movement of younger students. In addition, there is now a beach volleyball field.

The other sub-areas were mainly unsealed, paved and greened to make the stay in the school yard more attractive. The main entrance of House 1 also received a foyer. This work, which also included the installation of new seating, was completed in the 2015 autumn break. From this point on, the entire school yard was again usable for teachers and students.

In 2016, a glass roof was erected, which enables the dry transition between houses 1 and 2. Individual side elements of this canopy illustrate the life story of Melanchthon or illustrate quotes from the philosopher.

“ The ingratitude of the students is notorious . Far from seeing the pedagogue's merits, they believe that no one cares less for them. The parents do not adopt a significantly different attitude. They don't think about praising the teacher for the students' learning success, but blame them for their shortcomings. "

Comprehensive renovation of the auditorium 2013–2014

At the end of the 2013/2014 school year, in addition to the work on the schoolyard, another construction project was started: the renovation of the auditorium. The focus of the work was on an improvement from both a technical and an aesthetic point of view to the auditorium, which had existed since 1989 and which has not been renovated since then. The construction project, which also includes the installation of a facade, was completed in mid-November 2014 and all events can now take place in a modern setting. In 2016, the auditorium also received a new stage, which is equipped with a curtain and thus provides an appropriate setting for the regular theater performances of the performing and acting courses.
