Melita Sunjic

Melita Sunjic (* 1955 in Rijeka ) is an Austrian journalist and publicist with Croatian roots. She was long-standing press officer of the UNHCR .

Life

Melita Sunjic came to Austria as a refugee child in 1957. Until she was ten, she lived with her parents in a UNHCR refugee camp in Steyr and Linz . After studying journalism and doing a doctorate at the University of Vienna , Sunjic worked as a journalist, and between 1980 and 1993 she headed the foreign policy editorial team of the Wiener Zeitung . Then she moved to UNHCR - the United Nations refugee agency. As the head press spokeswoman she worked in war and crisis regions in Afghanistan , Sudan , Angola , Iraq , the Balkans , Georgia and Nepal . In addition, she conducted field research on the reasons for migration, expectations, strategies and the vulnerability of refugees in the Near and Middle East and in African countries . On the basis of these studies, she developed the "www.tellingtherealstory.org" campaign, a digital platform for the exchange of information that has been visited annually by several million people from the affected countries since then.

In the media, Sunjic has repeatedly expressed himself critical of the way politicians deal with current refugee movements and called for more solidarity.
