The Mellensee is an inland lake belonging to the Uckermark Lakes in the municipality of Boitzenburger Land near the village of Funkenhagen.

The lake is located south of Fürstenwerder in the Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park in the Uckermark district , Brandenburg , near the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It has a maximum length of around 2.4 kilometers and a maximum width of around 500 meters. The village of Funkenhagen is located on the south bank of the lake. The water is a glacial tongue basin lake and was created during the Vistula Ice Age. It is divided into an island into a narrow west side and a wide basin in the southeast. The lake has a catchment area of 93 km².

The name is probably derived from the Old Slavic word mêlĭ for shallow .

The area around the lake is hilly and the western part is used for agriculture. The eastern part is forested.

Water network

The Mellensee lies formally in the course of the river that  drains into the Ucker , i.e. into the Stettiner Haff of the Baltic Sea .

However, the actual situation is a little more complicated:

With the Isernpurt, the lake has an artificial inflow from the Carwitzer See . The Isernpurt was built from 1575 to 1578 to compensate for high water levels in the Feldberg lakes , which can occur when there is heavy rainfall. At water levels of 4 cm below normal (Carwitz gauge 150 cm corresponding to 83.81 m above sea level; the long-term mean water 1980-2018 is 154 cm corresponding to 83.85 m above sea level) the Isernpurt falls dry. The name Isernpurt for Iron Gate goes back to a so-called weir that was once equipped with iron fuses. The Feldberg Lakes primarily have a permanent groundwater flow to the Krüselinsee in the surface catchment area of the Lychener waters and thus the Havel .

From the Mellensee the water flows through the Krewitzsee and the Marienfließ (a section of the river) into the reservoir from Boitzenburger Küchenteich , Schumellensee  and Hardenbecker Haussee near Boitzenburg . From this one not only lets the water run off into the stream, but sometimes even more through the Haussegraben into the Lychener waters. Thus, the Mellensee belongs to an extensive pseudobifurcation that is part of two surface catchment areas.

The majority of the water from the river no longer reaches the Ucker through the old river, but is instead fed into the Quillow a few kilometers beforehand .
