Melocactus peruvianus is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet peruvianus refers to the occurrence of the species in Peru .
description
Melocactus peruvianus grows with dark green, depressed spherical to pyramidal or short cylindrical shoots that reach the same height with diameters of up to 20 centimeters. There are eight to 16 ribs . The very variable thorns are reddish brown to black. The one to four central spines, which can also be missing, are up to 6 centimeters long. The up to 6 centimeters long four to 14 radial spines are straight to strongly curved, sometimes interlocking and arranged in a comb. The often small cephalium , consisting of conspicuous reddish bristles, grows up to 20 centimeters high and has a diameter of 8 centimeters.
The magenta colored flowers are up to 2.4 centimeters long and have a diameter of 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters. They clearly protrude from the cephalium. The fruits are red at the top and are 1.6 to 2.5 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Melocactus peruvianus is widespread in the Ecuadorian province of El Oro and the Peruvian regions of Tumbes , Piura , Lambayeque , La Libertad , Ancash , Lima and Arequipa on the western slopes of the Andes at altitudes of up to 1270 meters.
It was first described in 1913 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . A nomenclature synonym is Cactus townsendii Britton & Rose (1922).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
