Melton tuba quartet

The Melton Tuba Quartet is the only professional quartet in Germany that is exclusively made up of tuba players . It plays original compositions and arrangements from classical music as well as from the fields of jazz , entertainment and marching music . Since it was founded in 1987, the musicians have been able to develop a lively concert activity throughout Germany and beyond, which is now documented on five CDs.

The Melton Tuba Quartet consists of the solo tubists from four important German orchestras, namely Hartmut Müller ( Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra ), Heiko Triebener ( Bamberg Symphony - Bavarian State Philharmonic ), Jörg Wachsmuth ( Dresden Philharmonic ) and Ulrich Haas ( Duisburg Philharmonic ). The instruments vary from work to work; euphonium , bass and double bass tuba are used. The four musicians play some arrangements exclusively on tubes.

history

The Melton Tuba Quartet was founded in 1987 and named itself after the tuba brand Melton of the instrument maker Wenzel Meinl . Henrik Tietz , who died in 1994, was one of the founding members . He was first followed by Markus Hötzel and then in 2005 by Jörg Wachsmuth. Soon after the first concerts, appearances on radio and television as well as at international tuba congresses and festivals, for example in Washington and Riva del Garda . The most important concerts include a performance at the Berlin Philharmonic in 1992 , at the Rheingau Music Festival in 1995 and at the Brandenburg Music Festival in 2010 . In 1991 the ensemble was awarded second prize in the international brass competition for the prize of the European City of Passau. Numerous composers wrote original works for the quartet, including Lutz Werner Hesse , Ingo Luis , Kerry Turner , Franz Watz , Ernst-Thilo Kalke , Rolf Alexander Wilhelm and Richard Roblee . The American tuba player and composer John Stevens wrote the Grand Concerto 4 Tubas for the first time in 2009/10, an original work for tuba quartet and orchestra, which was premiered in November 2011 in Duisburg with the Duisburg Symphony Orchestra under Carl St. Clair . This concert was released on CD along with other works by the composer, including a tuba octet .

In addition to contemporary works, most of which were composed for the Melton Tuba Quartet, the quartet plays numerous arrangements of popular classical music, such as versions of Rimski's Flight of the Bumblebee, the Second Hungarian Rhapsody by Franz Liszt or works by Rossini , Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev . Another foundation of the repertoire is classical marching music - the concerts usually begin with The Washington Post by John Philip Sousa . In addition, many classics from the fields of rock , pop , jazz and blues were arranged for the ensemble. Many of their concerts are cheerful, moderated and especially aimed at young listeners.
