The Menara Kuala Lumpur (short Menara KL , English: Kuala Lumpur Tower , or KL Tower ) is with 421 meters the highest television tower in Malaysia and the seventh highest in the world . It stands on the 90-meter-high Bukit Nanas (German: pineapple hill ) in the Malaysian capital and thus enables a view of the Petronas Towers from above . The tower is owned by a subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia .
history
The construction work for Menara KL can be divided into three phases. In the first phase, which began on October 4, 1991, the construction site at Jalan Punchak was widened and excavation work began. The work was completed on August 15, 1992. In the second phase, from July 6, 1992, the foundation was laid and 50,000 cubic meters of concrete poured into the construction pit within 31 hours. The foundation work was completed on April 15, 1993.
It was not until May of the following year that the tower shaft began to be pulled up and the tower cage erected. The 317 meter high tower shaft has a diameter of 24.5 meters at the base and 13.16 meters at the transition to the tower cage. The structure, built using the slipform process , has a surface area of 83,000 square meters. The topping-out ceremony with the installation of the antenna mast took place on September 13, 1994. The public and security facilities were then installed. The tower was opened to visitors for the first time on July 23, 1996. The official opening ceremony took place on October 1, 1996 in the presence of the then Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad .
description
Architecture and construction technology
The foundation of the television tower protrudes 17 meters and has a maximum diameter of 54 meters. The shaft has a diameter of 24.5 meters which tapers to 13.6 meters. The thickness of the tower shaft varies between 1.4 meters and 60 centimeters. Four high-speed elevators take visitors up to the eight-story tower cage , which is located at a height of 276 meters. Alternatively, 2058 levels are available. The tower cage has six main levels with a total area of 7770 square meters, a viewing deck and a revolving restaurant . The tower cage has a maximum diameter of 49.8 meters. The ceilings in this building were made as a composite structure and each consist of 32 segments supported by steel ring girders, 16 radial frames made of rolled profiles. The antenna support consists of a four-walled framework construction. The steel antenna on the roof is 86 meters high. The total mass of the tower is 100,000 tons, 45,000 tons of which is concrete and 5,300 tons of reinforced concrete . The steel structures have a mass of 1,300 tons.
The tower combines Islamic architectural elements with modern architecture. The slightly profiled tower shaft, which is reminiscent of the design of classic columns, is unusual . The entrance hall is decorated with glass-clad domes that glisten like diamonds when the light is appropriate.
The floors of the tower cage are divided into the following areas of use:
level | height | function |
---|---|---|
6th | 318 meters | Operating level for broadcasting |
5 | 311 meters | Service room for the tower |
4th | 301 meters | Operational level for telecommunications |
3 | 293 meters | Banquet hall |
2 | 283 meters | Revolving restaurant |
1 | 276 meters | Viewing platform |
0 | 270 meters | Escape area for emergencies |
Between the 6th floor and the roof to 335 feet still exists mezzanine .
The tower's architects were Kumpulan Senireka Sdn. Bhd., The construction was carried out by the German construction company Wayss & Freytag . The project received technical support from the Arup engineering office and the Arup Jururunding branch located in Kuala Lumpur.
use
The tower is open to the public as a lookout tower. The revolving restaurant seats 300 guests and rotates on its own axis in 90 minutes. In addition, the operator is installing a base jumping station on the roof of the tower cage at a height of 335 meters . In addition, international jumping events have been held since 1999. At the base of the tower is a building with 80,417.5 square meters of floor space, which among other things offers a small theater for up to 50 spectators and an amphitheater with up to 250 seats.
