The Mercedes-Benz Championship was until 2009 one of two international golf tournaments of the European Tour in Germany . It has been held annually since 1987 (with one interruption in 2006). Until 2005 the tournament was called German Masters.
From 1987 to 1993 the tournament was held at the Stuttgart Golf Club Solitude , then until 1997 at the Motzener See Golf Club in Berlin . The tournament has been held at the Gut Lärchenhof Golf Club in Pulheim since 1998 .
After the BMW International Open in Munich, the Mercedes-Benz Championship was considered the second most important golf tournament in Germany. Since the name was changed in 2007, the tournament has been played according to the winners only principle, which means that only players who had won a tournament on the European Tour during the year were qualified. In addition, the tournament has since been played without a cut.
In the summer of 2009, Mercedes announced that it would be stepping down as title sponsor.
With four successes (1989, 1991, 1997, 2001) Bernhard Langer , who also acts as the organizer of the tournament, is the record holder of the title.
