The Munich Trade Fair Center (formerly: New Munich Trade Fair Center ) is an exhibition center built from 1994 to 1998 in the Messestadt Riem in the eastern Munich district of Trudering-Riem . It is operated by Messe München GmbH.

Location and transport links

The exhibition center was built on the northern half of the former Munich-Riem Airport . It is bordered to the south by Willy-Brandt-Allee and the residential development of Messestadt Riem and the Riem Arcaden , where the two underground stations Messestadt West and Messestadt Ost on the U2 line are also located . The A 94 motorway, to which the exhibition center is connected with two driveways, passes in the north . Even further north is the Munich-Riem S-Bahn station , from where a freight track has been running to the exhibition grounds since 2001 . A direct connection of the fair to the S-Bahn is being discussed in the course of the construction of the Erdinger Ringschluss , which would also result in a direct connection to Munich Airport . The Munich Exhibition Tower is located on the east side of the hall area.

Terrain and Buildings

The heart of the exhibition grounds are the 18 exhibition halls with a total of 200,000 m² of exhibition space. In addition - depending on requirements - there is another 414,000 m² of open space in the north and east of the site. The two main entrances are at the western and eastern ends, they are connected by a 650 m long and 35 m wide atrium, from which there is access to twelve of the halls. The International Congress Center Munich (ICM), the exhibition center and the exhibition lake are located at the western entrance . In front of the eastern entrance is the 86 meter high exhibition tower . Architects were Bystrup, Bregenhoj + Partners, Kaup, Scholz, Jesse + Partner. On the third, northern entrance was created in 2006 for the FIFA World Cup , a press center with the World Cup Fountain , which since then is also used by Messe München. At the time of completion, the world's largest photovoltaic system was installed on a building roof on the roof of the exhibition halls . It produces around 1,000 MWh of electricity per year . At the northeast and southwest ends of the fair there are two parking garages with a total of around 5700 parking spaces. The outdoor area is used as a parking lot or at large trade fairs (such as Bauma ) as additional exhibition space.

From June 2016 to December 2018, two more halls (C5 and C6) and an additional congress area were built to the northeast of the existing building. The construction costs should be around 105 million euros.

Fair lake

To the west of the exhibition halls - between the former airport tower in the north and the Messestadt West underground station or Willy-Brandt-Platz in the south - lies the 390 m long and 46 to 94 m wide exhibition lake with a water surface of 2.6 ha It is divided in the middle by a dam leading to the main entrance into a northern and a southern part. The street “Am Messesee” runs along the dam as an extension of Joseph-Wild-Straße; it is used as a route for taxis during trade fair events. The lake drops from the dam to the north over one sheet pile wall and to the south over two sheet pile walls, so that a continuous water flow is achieved. In the resulting pools there are three water fountains that are in operation during the summer months. At the north end, the water runs into an infiltration basin filled with stones. The banks are overgrown with reeds in places . In front of the entrance to the fair, the two-part installation Gran Paradiso by Munich artist Stephan Huber from 1997 stands in the water.
