Messnerova strouha is the Czech name of a mountain stream in the eastern Giant Mountains .

location

The sources of the brook, which was called Messnerbach from the time it was cleared by German-speaking settlers until the end of World War II , are located at an altitude of 1225 meters above sea level on the southeastern slopes of the Rosenberg (Czech:  Růžová hora , 1396 m). It lies entirely in the area of the National Park of the Czech Giant Mountains Krkonošský národní park (KRNAP) and flows through the Messnergrund (cs:  Messnerův důl ), which lies under the southern slope of the Rennerkoppe (cs:  Rennerova hora ), initially flows in a south-east direction . After about 1.4 kilometers, it turns sharply north-east below the Pinkenberg (cs:  Pěnkavčí vrch , 1105 m). After a further 800 meters, it flows as the southernmost, longest and most water-rich tributary below the scattered settlement Šímovy chalupy (German:  Simmaberg ) into the Löwenbach (cs:  Jelení potok ), which itself rises on the eastern slope of the Schneekoppe and a little lower at the end of the Löwengrund (cs :  Lví důl ) flows into the Kleine Aupa .

history

The area has been known for its abundance of wood since the second third of the 16th century at the latest, when the original jungle was cut down here and in the neighboring Löwengrund to ensure that the silver mines in Kuttenberg were supplied with wood . The felled spruce, fir and beech trunks were carried into the valley in wooden gutters. The cordwood was then first washed to the Aupa and on it and the Elbe to Kuttenberg. For this purpose, so-called Klausen were created, small weir systems in which the water was dammed, as here in the Messnerklause. But the extensive overexploitation did not last forever. As can be seen from a report of the commission made up of officials of the mine administration dated September 16, 1609, after forty years of harvesting there was no wood left that could have been felled.

Later the Counts of Czernin-Morzin took care of the reforestation and wood remained the most important raw material until the first half of the 20th century. In many cases , the wood was processed into charcoal on site in Meilern , which was usually carried to the ironworks in Schmiedeberg in Silesia . Even today you can see circular areas up to 12 meters in diameter along the Messnerbach - ground plans of former coal piles.

With the advent of tourism in the first third of the 19th century, the romantic valley with its many rapids became a destination for many summer visitors . After several floods destroyed four bridges and swept away large parts of the Holzfällerweg completed in 1889, the Messnergrund was not accessible for many years. Between 1997 and 1999 the path was reconstructed and the valley is open to hikers again.
