Šímovy chalupy (German: Simmaberg ) is a scattered Czech settlement in the eastern Giant Mountains . It is located in the area of the municipality of Malá Úpa .

location

The mountain village lies above the Löwengrund ( Lví důl ) at an altitude of about 1010-1060 meters on the southern slope of the Jelení hora ( Lion Mountain , 1171 m), a foothill of the Black Koppe (pl .: Czarna Kopa , cs .: Svorová hora , 1407 m). The group of around nine Bergbauden is spread over an extensive meadow area that resulted from clearing and was previously used for alpine farming . Many of the houses are surrounded by a so-called agricultural wall, which consists of stones that were picked up by the residents when they mowed the meadows and piled up along the property line. This collection of mountain farms, known as the meadow enclave, is almost typical for the Giant Mountains and similar settlements can be found, for example, in the fox meadow below the Fuchsberg ( Liščí hora ) or on the Friesberg ( Světlý vrch ).

Simmaberg is one of the most remote places in the Giant Mountains. It is one of the most sparsely populated areas in the region and has no connection to modern supply networks. Only in the years 1976 to 1982, after some controversy, was the construction of the asphalt road through the Löwengrund completed, which connected “Simons Hütten” with the neighboring settlement “Niklův vrch” ( Nikelsberg ) and Malá Úpa.

architecture

The ensemble of timbered mountain houses is an extremely valuable building-historical legacy of the Eastern Giant Mountains folk architecture. Only here can all the different types be found together. At the top is the former forester's house with a risalit in the front of the building. An ancient building with a traditional gable roof and the typical Kleinaupa hayloft dormer on the rear side is just as exemplary as buildings of the most recent development type with a habitable mezzanine above the timbered ground floor. The top floor is brightened up by a typical front saddle dormer, and at the back there are hayloft dormers. The Šímovy Chalupy were therefore included in 2004 as the first monument protection area for folk architecture in the Giant Mountains in the list of village monument zones in the Czech Republic "Vesnická památková zóna" (VPZ).
