Michèle Roberts

Michèle Brigitte Roberts (born May 20, 1949 in Bushey , Hertfordshire ) is a British writer.

Life

Michèle Roberts is the daughter of a British and a Frenchwoman and grew up in Edgware , Middlesex . She attended a Catholic convent school and studied English at Somerville College of Oxford University . She trained as a librarian at University College London . She was with the British Council in Bangkok in 1973/74 .

Roberts has been active in the women's movement since the 1970s. With Sara Maitland , Michelene Wandor and Zoe Fairbairns she formed a socialist writing collective.

From 1975 to 1977 she worked for the feminist magazine Spare Rib and from 1981 to 1983 for the free city magazine City Limits . Her first novel, A Piece of the Night , was published in 1978. The novel Daughters of the House was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1992 and received the 1993 WH Smith Literary Award . Her autobiography Paper Houses , published in 2010, also sheds light on her writing.

Roberts taught creative writing at the University of East Anglia . She has been a visiting professor at Nottingham Trent University on several occasions . In 1999 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature . She was appointed Chevalier de l ' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres , and she was rejected as a "Republican" from the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
