Life

The son of the silk shopkeeper Caspar Abel from Stendal studied rhetoric, theology and law at the Viadrina University in Frankfurt (Oder) from 1553 . From 1562 to 1566/67 Abel worked as a school teacher in Lauban in Upper Lusatia . From 1567 to around 1578 he held positions in Gröditz, Dresden , Leipzig and elsewhere. From around 1578 Abel served as court poet to Emperor Rudolf II in Vienna . There he was crowned a poet before 1582. From 1583 to 1585 he was the rector of the Protestant Latin School in Iglau in Moravia. In early 1585 he was imprisoned in Jihlava because of a love affair. Abel was only released at the instigation of Emperor Rudolf II at the end of 1587. Then he stayed with Frederick II of Denmark. In 1587 Abel returned to Frankfurt (Oder). There he worked from 1587 to 1594 as the rector of the municipal lyceum. In 1594 he still had to flee because of the Iglauer Affair and was officially declared dead in 1595 for his protection. As can be deduced from poems, however, he still lived in Neumark in 1608. He died in Leipzig in 1609. He was the great-great-uncle of the polyhistor and Low German poet Caspar Abel .
