Michael Patrick Boatman (born October 25, 1964 in Colorado Springs , Colorado ) is an American actor and writer . He was best known in Germany for his role as Gordon Heywood in the sitcom Chaos City . He had further success with the portrayal as Samuel Beckett in the series China Beach and as Stanley Babson in the comedy series Arli $$ .

Life

Michael Boatman was born in Colorado Springs , Colorado in 1964 to Gwendolyn Boatman Pugh, a handicapped worker, and Daniel Boatman, a US Army officer. He grew up in Chicago and eventually studied at Western Illinois University, where he received his 1997 Alumni Achievement Award. He studied acting there, where he took on various roles, including the Oberon in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream and the Purlie in Purlie Victorious. He was also a member of the student comedy troupe "Troup Shock Treatment" that performed in local bars and nightclubs. In his senior year, Boatman won the prestigious Irene Ryan Theater Award for Best Supporting Actor during the final round of the competition at the Kennedy Center.

In 1986 he went to Chicago to study acting with Jane Brody, a well-known acting teacher and casting director. That year he also auditioned for the role of "Motown" in the acclaimed but critical Vietnam drama Hamburger Hill and got the role. He also had an appearance that year in Escape into the Unknown with River Phoenix and in The Trial of Bernhard Goetz for the American Playhouse series.

In 1988 he auditioned for the pilot of the television series "China Beach", a series that in turn addressed the Vietnam War. He was to take on the role of Samuel Beckett, an undertaker in the China Beach Mortuary, for the next three seasons. He was also seen as a co-actor in the Jackie Thomas Show with Tom Arnold and in the briefly broadcast series "Muscle".

In 1996 he got the role of Gordon on the ABC- aired sitcom Chaos City . Gordon is a somewhat irascible, openly gay minority commissioner who works on the staff of the New York City Mayor. For the role, Boatman was nominated five times for the "NAACP Image Awards" for best supporting actor in a comedy series. He also won the GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Association Against Defamation) award for best actor. In 1996, he played the role of "Stanley Babson", a pathologically disorderly financial director in the HBO series Arli $$ . For the role, he was nominated for four Image Awards for best supporting actor. Boatman also starred in the critically acclaimed Charles Burnett drama The Glass Shield , had roles in the movies The Peacemaker , starring George Clooney and Nicole Kidman , and Woman thou Art Loosed , and also starred in several television films.

Since 2007 he has played supporting roles in the movies The Killing of Wendy , American Summer and My Father's Will . He has had well-known guest appearances in many well-known series, including five episodes of Law & Order and Less Than Perfect , Yes , Dear , Scrubs , CSI: Miami and Grey's Anatomy . From 2009 to 2014 he starred in 17 episodes of the Good Wife series .

Boatman is also a screenwriter and writer. He often writes stories that play in the splatterpunk horror genre. His stories have been published in the multi-author anthology "Until Someone Loses an Eye, Sages and Swords and Badass Horror". His stories have also appeared in relevant magazines such as "Weird Tales", "Horror Garage" and "Red Scream". His first own collection of short stories, "God Laughs When You Die", was published on October 23, 2007 by Dyybuk Press. His humorous horror story "The Revenant Road" was published in 2009 by Drollerie Press.

In 2009 he starred in the American science fiction series Warehouse 13 a guest role. From 2012 to 2014 he was a supporting actor for Charlie Sheen's Anger Management , playing the role of neighbor and best friend Michael. Since 2013 he can be seen in a leading role as Charlie in the sitcom Instant Mom .
