Michael Bräuer

Michael Bräuer (born July 9, 1943 in Dresden ) is a German architect and town planner. In 1990 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Construction . In 1992 he became chairman of the expert group on the protection of urban monuments .

biography

Bräuer is the son of a teacher and the architect Helmuth Bräuer. He attended elementary school in Dresden and from 1957 to 1961 the Kreuzschule . After military service , he studied architecture from 1963 to 1969 at the Weimar University of Architecture and Construction .

From 1969 to 1989 he worked as an urban planner and architect in the Rostock urban planning office , where he became head of department in 1972 and deputy urban architect in 1982. His tasks were u. a. the university development, the city center, urban expansion areas ( Lütten Klein and east of the Warnow ) and the general planning. He succeeded in preventing the harbor storage facilities from being demolished. At the time of the fall of the Wall , he was briefly the city architect of Rostock from November 1989 .

From January 1990 to November 1990 he was then the last State Secretary in the Ministry of Building, Urban Development and Housing of the GDR at the time of Minister Gerhard Baumgärtel (CDU) (January – March) and Axel Viehweger ( LDPD / FDP ) (until October) in the Government Modrow or Government de Maizière appointed until these reigns ended in the context of German reunification .

Since April 1991 he has been a freelance architect and urban planner with an office in Rostock, at times as an architectural community with Ute Baumbach and Professor Peter Baumbach . The office is now also run by his son Jörn Bräuer.

In 1992, Bräuer was appointed by Federal Building Minister Irmgard Schwaetzer (FDP) to the expert group on urban monument protection. Together with Gottfried Kiesow, he was one of the two chairmen of this federal / state committee, which accompanied the funding programs for the protection of urban monuments in the historic city centers of East Germany. The group of experts conservation representatives, architects and urban planners were represented from West and East Germany, as well as conservation authorities and urban development speakers of the new states.

Bräuer is married to the architect Ingrid Bräuer; both have three children.
