Michael Gitlin (born April 23, 1943 in Cape Town , South Africa ) is a South African - Israeli - American sculptor who works and lives in New York .

life and work

Michael Gitlin's family emigrated to Israel from South Africa when he was five years old. Gitlin studied English literature and art history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem until 1967 .

In 1970 Gitlin moved to New York and graduated from the Pratt Institute with a Masters in 1972 .

He has taught sculpture at Parsons The New School for Design , Columbia University in New York, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and the University of California, Davis .

Gitlin is one of the post- minimalists , like Gordon Matta-Clark , Benni Efrat , Joel Shapiro , Joshua Neustein , Robert Grosvenor , Nahum Tevet and Ulrich Rückriem , who worked in Manhattan and Europe in the early 1970s.

He works three-dimensionally. At first with paper, then with wood. Many of his sculptures are displayed hanging on the wall. In recent years, other materials have increasingly been used, such as steel wool , copper wire, foam , elastane .

Subscriptions are an important part of the overall work of Michael Gitlin.

Exhibitions (selection)

In 1977 Gitlin exhibited at the Israel Museum as well as at documenta 6 in Kassel. He was represented by the Schmela Gallery in Düsseldorf. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York bought works.

He has had solo exhibitions at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (1977); Exit Art, New York (1985); Art Space Munich (1986); Bonner Kunstverein (1988); Kunsthalle Mannheim (1989) and in the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerp (1991).
