Michael Scott Kimmel (born February 26, 1951 ) is an American sociologist and professor of sociology at Stony Brook University in New York .

Life

Kimmel came from a secular Jewish family, received his bachelor's degree from Vassar College in 1972 , his master's degree from Brown University in 1974 and his Ph.D. in 1981. at the University of California (Berkeley) .

Kimmel's research, teaching and publications focus on men's studies , gender studies and sexuality as well as political and social movements . A longtime feminist , he publishes the International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities and The Handbook of Studies on Men and Masculinities and is spokesman for the National Organization for Men against Sexism (NOMAS). In 2013 he founded his own center for research on men and masculinity. He is currently planning a master's degree in "Masculinity Studies" there.

In 2018, the allegation of a student who said she had been sexually molested by Kimmel caused a stir.
