Michael M. Gunter

Michael M. Gunter (born February 22, 1943 ) is an American political scientist . His specialty is the politics and history of the Middle East in the 20th century, especially that of the Kurds .

career

Gunter received his Bachelor of Arts in 1964 and his Masters degree in 1966 from Columbia University . In 1972 he received his Ph.D. from Kent State University. in the theory of international relations . Since 1976 he has been working at Tennessee Technological University , since 1981 as a professor. He was visiting professor at the Technical University of the Middle East in Ankara , at the former International University Vienna , at the Xuhui College in Shanghai and at various US universities. He wrote several books and numerous magazine articles, especially on political developments affecting the Kurds.

He takes the view that the genocide of the Armenians does not meet the criteria of the UN Genocide Convention . He rejects the classification of the PKK as a terrorist organization and advocates a solution to the Kurdish conflict in Turkey by recognizing the PKK as a negotiating partner, following the example of the negotiations between the IRA and the British government in the 1990s.
