biography

Mair was one of the best downhill racers in Italy in the 1980s , also in the then new Super-G and in the combination he celebrated successes. He achieved his first top ten result in the Ski World Cup with tenth place in the downhill from Crans-Montana on December 21, 1981. At the 1982 World Cup in Schladming , he finished tenth in the downhill.

In the second Super-G in World Cup history, Mair celebrated his first victory on December 22, 1982 at the 3-tre races in Madonna di Campiglio . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo , he came in 15th place in downhill, a year later he reached 12th place at the World Championships in Bormio .

The South Tyrolean celebrated his second World Cup victory on December 7, 1985 on the downhill run from Val-d'Isère . Three more podium places helped him to third place in the downhill classification in the 1985/86 season . 1986/87 he reached the 5th place in the downhill ranking with a total of four podium places. On January 23, 1988, he celebrated his third World Cup victory in the downhill run from Leukerbad and finished second in the downhill classification behind the Swiss Pirmin Zurbriggen . At the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary in 1988 , he went to the start in the downhill, but could not finish the race. In November 1989 he tore a cruciate ligament during downhill training on the Saslong in Val Gardena , after which he was unable to build on his earlier successes.

Mair drove his last World Cup race on January 18, 1992. In total, he won three World Cup races and made it onto the podium 16 times. From 1983 to 1987 he won four Italian championship titles . After Mair had ended his active career as a racer, he became the head coach of the Italian women's national ski team.
