In 1959 May competed in various Formula Junior races and achieved three victories in ten races. A use in Formula 2 at the Solitude Grand Prix was planned for 1960, but it did not materialize.
In 1961 May took part in the Scuderia Colonia team with the German Wolfgang Seidel with a Lotus 18 in the World Automobile Championship . For the Monaco Grand Prix he qualified in 13th place, but retired due to a defective oil pipe. In his second race, the French Grand Prix , he started from position 22 thanks to many failures in eleventh place. Participation in the German Grand Prix on the Nordschleife was also planned. However, due to a training accident, May could not start the race. In addition, May took part in three races that were not part of the World Cup, but in each of which he was eliminated.
After the accident at the German Grand Prix, May retired from active motorsport and was later involved in the development of a new fuel injection system at Porsche and Ferrari .
