Chief Minister and Prime Minister

After the PNP had initially won six of the 13 seats in parliament in the April 2003 elections, it won two more seats in a by-election on August 7, 2003 and thus had a majority over the previously ruling People's Democratic Movement (PDM) of Chief Minister Derek Taylor , who only had five seats. On February 28, 2009, Galmo Williams won after three ballots the position as leader of the Progressive National Party (PNP) and thus succeeded Misicks as party chairman. On March 16, 2009, due to "clear signs of corruption" in the Misick administration , Governor Gordon Wetherell announced plans to partially suspend the constitution, dissolve the cabinet and parliament, and take over power to the governor with the support of an advisory body for two years should. After intense pressure from PNP members Misick resigned against his original intentions early on March 23, 2009, whereupon Williams swore the oath of office as Prime Minister on the afternoon of March 23, 2009 and became the second Prime Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
