Michael Petschenig (born September 1, 1845 in Großedling near Wolfsberg (Carinthia) ; † June 17, 1923 in Vienna ) was an Austrian classical philologist.

life and work

Michael Petschenig studied classical philology , German studies and philosophy at the University of Graz from 1864 to 1868 . He became active in Corps Gothia I in Graz in 1864; the Innsbruck Corps Rhaetia awarded him membership in 1914. After the teaching examination in Latin and Greek (1869), he worked from 1870 as a supplement (assistant teacher) at the State High School in Trieste. After stints in Leoben and Klagenfurt (from 1871) he went to the 2nd State High School in Graz as a professor in 1873. In addition to his teaching activities, he was also active in academia. In 1876 he was awarded a Dr. phil. doctorate , in 1882 he completed his habilitation there. He returned the venia legendi in 1886 because it became apparent that he would not find a way into an academic career. In 1904 Petschenig was appointed a councilor.

Petschenig came out particularly with publications on late Latin . On behalf of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna , he published several text editions by Latin church fathers (in the series Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum ), with which he laid the foundation for the scientific study of these authors. Among them were the writings of Victor von Vita , Gorippus , Johannes Cassianus , Paulinus von Petricordia and Aurelius Augustinus . He also made important contributions to the ancient Horace commentaries and the Historia Augusta .

Petschenig is best known as the editor of the Latin dictionary by Joseph Maria Stowasser . In 1913 he published an abridged version of the lexicon under the title Der kleine Stowasser . Since then , the Stowasser has been used in this form by Latin learners in schools and universities.
