Baroque music
One focus of his work is the cultivation of baroque church music , in particular the works of Georg Philipp Telemann . A firm tradition is the opening of the Biederitz Music Summer with the performance of a Telemann Passion under his direction. This takes place at the International Telemann Competition and the Magdeburg Telemann Festival (in the monastery of Our Lady ).
In cooperation with the Telemann Center Magdeburg and the Telemann researcher Cantor Hans Peter Glimpf , works that have been forgotten were performed again for the first time in our time under Scholl's direction. Some of them were recorded for the first time on CD with the participation of the Biederitzer Kantorei, renowned vocal soloists and instrumentalists .
Scholl also established the music series “ Baroque Cantatas along the Romanesque Road ”, in which Telemann cantatas were mainly performed.
Contemporary music
Scholl is also interested in contemporary music. In 2007 and 2009 he conducted works by Sir Colin Mawby in German premieres. The composer was present in Biederitz and Magdeburg on this occasion. In 2008 Scholl premiered compositions by Maurizio Sebastianelli from Palestrina . In spring 2010 he led the performance of a St. John Passion by the choir director of the Magdeburg Theater, Martin Wagner . In October 2010 he conducted the world premiere of a Missa solemnis by Colin Mawby. Mawby dedicated this work to Michael Scholl and the Biederitzer Kantorei. Establishing the Catholic parish of St. Augustine in November 2010 was one under his management Augustine - motet , also a composition of the Magdeburg Choir Director Martin Wagner, in St. Peter's Church Magdeburg premiered.
Child and youth work
Michael Scholl also undertakes special activities to introduce young people to music. He developed an education-related project that regularly brings the Biederitzer Kantorei together with students from the Cathedral High School Magdeburg and the Magdeburg Norbertusgymnasius . Furthermore, in 2009 he initiated a project on the Handel oratorio Messiah under the title Messiah for Children . This kind of child and youth work was continued in 2010 with the world premiere of Colin Mawby's Missa solemnis , which was played especially as an orchestral mass for children . With the children's choir of the Mechthildschule Magdeburg and the Biederitzer Kinderkantorei , he performs a children's musical every year at the Biederitzer Ehlefest , such as the play Fikus Gummibaum and Susi Himmelreich (2008) by Johannes Matthias Michel .
