Michael Six

Michael Six (born September 23, 1874 in Weng im Innkreis , † November 27, 1938 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist .

The artist, who comes from a large farming family, attended the modeling department of the Salzburg State Trade School from 1891 to 1894 , began his career as a carver in Salzburg and then came to the Pöchlarner oven factory Erndt as a modeller . From 1898 to 1903 he studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts a . a. with Stefan Schwartz .

As a freelance artist, he concentrated primarily on religious topics in his work and his oeuvre was soon represented outside of Austria. He preferred to make his small sculptures out of wood, stone or metal. In addition, he dealt with the production of medals.

Six lived in poor circumstances and received support from the cooperative until his death in 1938, his widow Maria until her death in 1972. His son Michael died at the age of 22.

Memberships

From 1911 Six was a member of the cooperative of fine artists ( Künstlerhaus Wien ), where he was given the opportunity to exhibit. From 1914 he did military service . He belonged to the sculptors' association and was its chairman from 1926 to 1927. He also appears as a member of the Innviertel artists' guild.
