Michael Smith (born June 6, 1940 in Oldcastle , County Meath ) is an Irish clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Meath .

Life

Smith studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome . He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Meath on March 9, 1963 . In Rome he received his doctorate in canon law . After his return from Italy he worked in the Mullingar parish .

On November 17, 1983, Smith was named auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Meath and titular bishop of Leges by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained episcopate on January 29 of the following year by the Archbishop of Armagh , Cardinal Tomás Séamus Ó Fiaich . Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Gaetano Alibrandi , and the Bishop of Down and Connor , Cahal Daly .

Smith was named coadjutor of the Bishop of Meath on October 13, 1988, and succeeded Bishop John McCormack on May 16, 1990 with his retirement as Bishop of Meath.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on June 18, 2018.

Michael Smith is Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
