Michael Stiller (journalist)

Michael Stiller (born January 18, 1945 in Hirschberg , Lower Silesia Province ; † August 12, 2016 in Munich ) was a German journalist . He has received several awards for exposing CSU scandals.

Life

Michael Stiller grew up in Upper Austria after fleeing from Silesia . After attending the Jesuit College in Linz , he studied German, history and law in Munich and Würzburg from 1963 to 1967. In 1967 he received a scholarship at the German School of Journalism in Munich. From 1968 he worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , first as a state parliament correspondent, later as the chief editor for the field of Bavarian state politics. He was instrumental in uncovering numerous CSU scandals ( Amigo affair , Zwick affair , Schreiber affair ). Lukas Wallraff wrote in a review in the taz in 2002 : “The opposition in Bavaria consists of one man […] Only one name makes [the CSU] nervous: Michael Stiller.” Max Strauss took over for his research on Strauss and the CSU , the eldest son of the CSU politician, insulted in 1995 and described, among other things, as a "professional disinformant", against which he took legal action. In 2005 Stiller retired. He then continued to work as a freelance journalist for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit , the taz and for the Bayerische Staatszeitung .

Michael Stiller died in August 2016 at the age of 71 in his house in the Allach district of Munich .
