Michael Turnbull (born March 24, 1981 in Sydney ) is an Australian football player . The goalkeeper took part in the 2000 Olympic Games and two World Junior Championships .

Club career

Turnbull played for the Marconi Stallions in the National Soccer League between 2000 and 2004 . After they were hired, he moved to the Belgian club Standard Liège , but did not appear there and left the club after a year after his one-year contract was not renewed. Back in Australia, he played for a few months at Kingston City in the Victorian Premier League (VPL) in early 2006 . In mid-2006, he received an offer from the New Zealand A-League club New Zealand Knights . There he came to six missions during the season.

At the end of the season, the Knights were withdrawn from play and Turnbull moved back to Australia to Sydney United in the New South Wales Premier League (NSWPL). After two months with Sydney, he returned to the VPL and played with the Oakleigh Cannons until the end of the year . In early 2008 he played again with Sydney before moving to their league rivals Wollongong FC .

National team

Turnbull took part in the Junior World Championships in 1999 in Nigeria and 2001 in Argentina in part. In 1999 he was the first two games behind Anthony Breaden substitute goalkeeper. In the third and decisive group game against Ireland he was then in the 0: 4 defeat in goal.

In 2001 he was the regular goalkeeper in the first two games against Japan and the Czech Republic, but was replaced in the last group game by Jess Vanstrattan , who also guarded the goal in the defeat in the round of 16 against Brazil.

As early as 2000, Turnbull was a member of the Olympic team that took part in the soccer tournament in its own country. He was a substitute goalkeeper behind Danny Milosevic and was not used in the preliminary round. In qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games, he came to some missions, but Brad Jones and Eugene Galekovic were nominated for the final tournament .
