Michael Wimberly

Michael Wimberly (* around 1960 in Fort Worth ) is an American jazz musician ( drums , percussion , composition ).

Live and act

Wimberly grew up in Cleveland in the 1970s and moved to New York in 1982. There he completed his master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music ; in addition, he worked from the early 1990s with Steve Coleman and in the free jazz scene a. a. with Charles Gayle , Cooper-Moore , David Murray and Oluyemi Thomas . In 1998 he released the percussion album Deconstruction-Reconstruction under his own name . With Hilliard Greene , Louis Belogenis and Roy Campbell he formed the formation Exuberance , with which two albums were created in 2002/03. In the following decade he played with Borah Bergman , Kidd Jordan , William Parker , Thollem McDonas and Nels Cline . In the field of jazz he was involved in 39 recording sessions between 1990 and 2015, including a. also with Jean-Paul Bourelly , Peter Mignolsa , Zusaan Kali Fasteau , Ivo Perelman , Andrew Lamb , David Haney's Primitive Arkestra Live and Michael Bisio .

Wimberly has composed for New York dance companies such as the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, Urban Bush Women, Forces of Nature and the Joffrey Ballet . He teaches at the Drummers' Collective and from 2012 at Bennington College . As a soloist on the djembe , he joined European broadcasters and the International Regions Symphony Orchestra in African Oratorio by Daniel Schnyder on. Wimberly's symphonic work Kora Saba has been performed by the Yakima Chamber Orchestra in Yakima, Washington and the Sage City Symphony in Bennington, Vermont. He also initiated the Together with Music cooperative in São Miguel Açores and the Power of Drum percussion festival .

Michael Wimberly should not be confused with the big band trombonist Mike Wimberly.
