Kukryniksy ( Russian Кукрыниксы ) is an acronym for a group of three Soviet signatory and cartoonists :

The three artists are buried next to each other in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery.

Work and life of the group

It was characteristic of the working style of these artists that first everyone drew a draft on a given topic. After the best proposal was chosen, they developed this drawing together and signed it with "Kukryniksy".

The three met at the Moscow Art School Vchutemas , which Kupriyanow graduated from 1921 to 1929, Krylov from 1921 to 1928 and Sokolov from 1923 to 1929.

From 1925 the three students worked together as permanent employees of the newspapers Komsomolskaya Pravda , Literaturnaja Gazeta , and later also for the cartoon magazine Krokodil and other newspapers and journals. During the Great Patriotic War in particular, they drew vicious political caricatures. These caricatures were also dropped as postcards behind the German front. German soldiers who carried these postcards face the death penalty.

In addition to their caricatures and posters, the three also created book illustrations, for example for Twelve Chairs by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrow and for Der Linkhander by Nikolai Leskov .

Kupriyanov became a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR . He was honored as a hero of socialist labor and as a People's Artist of the USSR, as well as with other state awards. As a freelance artist he drew landscapes mainly in Western Europe , Japan and the USA .

Krylov was also a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. Honored many times with social and state awards, he mainly drew portraits, landscapes and still lifes.

Sokolov was a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. Besides political caricature, his main field of work was landscape and portrait painting. He has received numerous social and state awards.
