Michel Van Parys

Michel Van Parys OSB (born July 10, 1942 in Ghent , Belgium ) is a Belgian religious . He was abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Chevetogne from 1991 to 1997 and hegumen of the Grottaferrata Abbey of the Basilians from 2013 to 2016 .

Life

Michel Van Parys first completed a humanistic degree at the Collège Sainte-Barbe in Ghent. On December 29, 1960, he joined the Congregation of Benedictines at the Abbey Chevetogne. He studied philosophy and theology as well as oriental classical languages ​​at the Sorbonne University in Paris, where he also received his doctorate in 1968 with a thesis on Gregor von Nyssa . He was ordained a priest on May 29, 1969 and became master of novices in Chevetogne Abbey. In 1971 he was elected Prior of Chevetogne. From 1991 to 1997 he was Abbot of Chevetogne.

Since 1993 he had worked with the Congregation for the Oriental Churches to carry out various missions and assignments. Pope John Paul II brought him to the Eastern Church Congregation from 1997 to 2002 as a consultant. From 2008 to 2013 he was papal envoy for the Armenian Mechitarist Congregation in Venice. From 2013 to 2016 Michel Van Parys was Hegumen (Abbot) of the Basilian Territorial Abbey of Grottaferrata.

Since 2016 he has been the Regens of the Pontifical Greek College of St. Athanasius in Rome , founded in 1577 as a Pontifical College and seminary for seminarians from Greece , the Middle East and the Greek-speaking regions of southern Italy .

Michel Van Parys was editor of Revue Irénikon from 2002 to 2013 in Chevetogne from 2002 to 2013. He is a member of the scientific committee of the Convegno ecumenico internazionale di spiritualità ortodossa (International Ecumenical Conference of Orthodox Spirituality), which takes place every year in the community of Bose is held.
