Michipicoten River is a river in the Algoma District in the north of the Canadian province of Ontario .

It has its origins in Dog Lake . It flows south to Michipicoten Bay of Lake Superior , where it joins the Magpie River near the town of Wawa . The river, including the Lochalsh River from its outflow from Wabatongushi Lake, has a total length of 113 km and a catchment area of 5200 km².

The river name means something like "large steep bank" in the language of the Ojibwe and refers to the hills near the river mouth.

The Michipicoten River flows south from Dog Lake. It flows through a number of larger lakes: Manitowik Lake and Whitefish Lake . After that it flows mainly in a westerly direction to the Upper Lake. There are four hydroelectric plants on this lower course of the river. These are used by Brookfield Power Inc. operated.

Tributaries

The Michipicoten River's tributaries are:

history

At the time of the fur trade, the river formed an access route to James Bay , which led over the two other rivers Missinaibi River and Moose River . Pierre-Esprit Radisson and Médard des Groseilliers were probably the first to explore this route. At the beginning of the 18th century, a French trading post was set up at the mouth of the river. The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) began building several trading posts along the trade route in the 1770s. The post at Michipicoten River existed until 1904 and is now part of the Michipicoten Post Provincial Park .

In 1781, the HBC surveyor Philip Turnor studied the river. A number of improvements to portages along the river followed. After 1821, the Moose-Missinaibi-Michipicoten route formed the main supply route for HBC's Lake Superior District .
