The Middle Fork Holston River is a right tributary of the South Fork Holston River in southwest Virginia .
Its source is in Wythe County, not far from the village of Rural Retreat . The small river runs in an approximately southwest direction through Smyth County and also flows through its administrative seat Marion . In Washington County , the Middle Fork Holston River was dammed by the Edmondson Dam, which was partially demolished in 1982 . After about 91 kilometers it flows into the South Fork Holston River at the beginning of South Holston Lake .
