Mihnea Popa (born August 11, 1973 ) is a Romanian - American mathematician who studies algebraic geometry .

Popa studied at the University of Bucharest (until 1996) and at the University of California, Los Angeles (until 1997) and received his doctorate in 2001 from Robert Lazarsfeld at the University of Michigan (Linear Series on Moduli Spaces of Vector Bundles on Curves). From 2001 to 2005 he was Benjamin Peirce Assistant Professor at Harvard University , from 2005 Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago , from 2007 Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and from 2014 Professor at Northwestern University .

He was invited speaker at the international mathematicians' congress in Rio de Janeiro 2018 (D-Modules in Birational Geometry).

In 2015 he was made a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He also received the AMS Centennial Fellowship (2005–2007) and was a Sloan Research Fellow (2007–2009) and Simons Fellow (2015/16). Since 1996 he has been a member of the Mathematical Institute of the Romanian Academy of Sciences.
