Michael D'Andrea "Mike" Carter (born October 29, 1960 in Dallas , Texas ) is a retired American athlete and football player .

Career

As a student at Southern Methodist University , Carter won a total of seven NCAA championship titles in the shot put : three outdoors (1980, 1981, and 1983) and four indoors (1980, 1981, 1983, and 1984). He also won the gold medal at the 1981 Summer Universiade in Bucharest. He celebrated his most significant success in athletics at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. There he won the silver medal in the shot put with a distance of 21.09 m behind the Italian Alessandro Andrei (21.26 m) and in front of his compatriot Dave Laut (20.97 m).

Carter's personal best is 21.76 m, struck on June 2, 1984 in Eugene . His daughter Michelle is also a successful shot putter.

American football

The 1.89 m tall and 127 kg heavy Carter was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1984 . He played on the defensive line and stayed with the club until the end of his playing career in 1992. The 49ers won three Super Bowls during that time. In 121 games of the regular season , 97 of them from the start, Carter scored 22.5 sacks . He was nominated three times for the Pro Bowl .
